Bingel

Bingel

Bingel is a website for grades 1-6. This website is based on a game world where students get reward for their assignments. Below I describe more in depth how Bingel works.

Teacher at Bingel: Being a teacher and using Bingel, I personally think is no problem. Bingel is a simple tool to help you as a teacher of finished materials, compiles students' results and shows how the students have done in detail for each task and what time of day the students did the information. As a teacher, you can give the kids feedback in the form of a symbol, pingping and comment. It greatly appreciates the students!

Student at Bingel:
Each student has their own login that they use when logging in to Bingel. There students can see their assignments and visit their class island. Once the students have done their assignments, they are displayed in three different colors green, yellow and red. These colors describe how it has happened to the students with the task. Green means that it was easy for the student, red that it was very difficult and yellow that the student managed the assignment on his second chance. An assignment contains about ten tasks. These data may look different. Bingel is perceived as a game for the students. Each student has his own avatar (old man) that they can completely personalize. With the help of pingping (points) students can buy clothes, different hairstyles, faces, etc., for example. Students get reward and experience this work tool as a gaming world, the students love Bingel!

Good to know:
All teachers who use this website have their own login. Where they can give students different assignments in the subjects mathematics, Swedish and English. Bingel is a website designed for children. In each course the students have their own island where students can do extra assignments. Once the students have done their assignments as they receive from their teacher or mission on the island. Then the students get reward (pingping). They can use their pingping to, for example, buy different clothes for their own avatar. The avatar follows the student during the game and it greatly appreciates the students.

My colleagues, me and other teachers I talked to (who use Bingel) are very pleased with this tool.

bubbleandpebble

Bubble and Pebble

This is an early learners interactive game that can be played online, or can be downloaded through the Apple store or Google play store. An interesting interface that is not intimidating to a young user; in fact it is quite inviting because of its simplicity. This interactive game has garnered high recognition from many established institutions. The good thing as well.......its free.

Whether it is played on a computer or downloaded onto a tablet device, the interface itself is quite easy to navigate for any user. The games include a mixture of teaching strategies that make use of colours, numbers, pictures, etc. There is also a child's voice to help reassure the user that the actions taken are received as well give direction. I did a test on my sister-in-laws 3 year old child and it was interesting to see how fascinated she was with the application. She continued to play with thee application for about 30 minutes; which we were pleasantly surprised.

The games are simple, well thought out, and not meant to overcomplicate the purpose of the application. Essentially this app would be beneficial to a user between 4-5 years of age, and also depending on how well developed the user's English skills are. This is the kind of program that would be welcomed by any parent who would like to introduce their child to learn the early stages of the English language. In addition, this could be used in certain classroom environments where English training is not easily accessible.

The people behind the app are experienced EFL practitioners, but also received help from children in their class. So the research and development was accomplished by six year olds. So its obvious that other children will enjoy the experience.

Bingel

Bingel

I learned a few weeks ago that my school has bought a subscription to an app called Bingel and it’s from Samona and they have also learning material to the classroom.

The app is for grade 1-6 and the students have its own log in. When the students log in for the first time they have an avatar that’s just have shorts and a top on them. Now the student’s job is to collect points to buy the avatar clothes or superpower.  This avatar lives on an island and the students have different alternative to choose on. Most of the subjects that the student study in school they can practice on the island. Every grade has its own island.  Now the students gets a lot of different activities to take a part in.

The teacher can send the students activities if they noticed that the student need to work extra on something.

The teacher can see what all the students is doing and gets statistics on what they need to practice more on. And the students really like this game.

The teacher can limit the time the students play and they can choose what they want the students to play.

If the class have the books that goes along with this it’s more fun for the students. But it’s a fun way for kids to learn when they don’t know they are learning. One of the class in my school they have their own iPad and they are allowed to take it home and study on them and do their homework. That is from grade 4.  My colleague noticed that the students are playing a lot at home because they want to build up their avatar. But still it’s the teacher that decides what they can play.

Super Simple Songs

The ICT resource I’m particularly fond of and that I use quite often in the classroom is ‘Super Simple Songs'. The name is quite self-explanatory, however, for the sake of clarity I’ll explain what it entails. Basically, it’s English nursery rhymes and classic camp songs put together with videos to help kids learn and improve their English. The songs can either be bought on the website or they can be accessed on YouTube. So all you need is an internet connection to make it work!

From a teacher’s perspective, this is an incredibly useful tool since the songs also come with worksheets, flashcards, colouring pages, games and crafts. So, say you want to practice the alphabet, you play the alphabet song and later accompany this with tracing letter worksheets and flashcards which are at your disposal for free!

Alphabet Flashcards

The search engine on the website is very useful as you can search for whatever you would like to practice or reinforce in class. You could browse by song, topic, series or even type! There are 6 different levels and the level is indicated on each worksheet so it’s easy to know what worksheet you need for different groups.

When choosing a song it is essential that you carefully examine what it is that you want the pupils to learn. Is it specific vocabulary, pronunciation, topic or grammar? Thus, having a clear idea beforehand will make it easier for you to pick a relevant song. It is also important to bear in mind the age and English level of your pupils as some songs might be either too difficult or too easy which will lead to the pupils losing interest! Therefore, always make sure you listen to the song beforehand and teach relevant vocabulary or structures so the kids don't lose interest. Also, as a backup, make sure you have the mp3 version of the songs, because although this is the age of YouTube, sometimes not being dependent on a connection might save your class! The kids might not be be able to see the video like that so it's also good if you know some simple choreography to accompany the songs!

From a student’s perspective, this website is also useful for the kids themselves! Not only can the children listen to the songs in the classroom, but they could also watch and listen to the songs at home together with the parents. The videos also come with some type of choreography and they are very colourful and the kids love to watch them and sing along. The songs encourage the kids to get up and move and follow the instructions on the video! It’s great fun for the kids and very educational and also helps to improve motor skills! Furthermore, songs can help support children's emotional development as they can express themselves through songs and it is a tool which increases enjoyment and participation  and could also help improve bonding! Moreover, the website also provides shows and games  which the children could access at home!

All in all, I find this website very useful as learning a language through songs is one of the best ways to help children improve their English and increase their curiosity. Many times all you need is a catchy song that the children will remember even after you’re done teaching a specific language skill and Super Simple Songs provides just that; super simple catchy songs! Happy singing y’all!

Bingel

                                                                              Bingel

At the school where I work, we have started to work more consciously with ICT. We have started using a web-based learning platform called Bingel. This platform is created by the publisher Samona. Bingel is a virtual complement to the publisher's own teaching material, which makes it more fun for the pupils to study and learn different subjects.  Bingel is a digital tool where the students train skills in a new, fun and motivating way.

To access Bingel, the school needs to buy an annual subscription. However, you can try Bingel for 30 days free of charge. Even though Bingel is based on the publisher´s teaching material, you do not have to work with or have access to the physical book. However, the idea is that Bingel is a complement the book and help students to repeat and understand a certain field of work through a more varied approach. The system needs an administrator who controls who has the access to what within the system, both students and teachers.

The teacher can control the tasks the students work with. This means that the teacher can choose to limit the students to work with tasks in certain areas of work or let the students work freely. However, the risk of allowing students to work alone in their own pace may be that some students may finish all tasks relatively quickly and get way forward while others may not be able to do more than a few tasks, depending on the students' ability and interest. Furthermore, using Bingel as a tool in teaching facilitates the teacher's work because the teacher does not need to develop new material for each subject area because it already exists in the platform. The task packages also work well as self-correcting homework. Also, Bingel helps the teacher to adapt exercises according to each student’s level or to the whole class. Meanwhile the teacher has an overview of who has completed the task and how they did but also when they did it. I think it is good for teachers to know where mostly of the exercises are done because this helps the teacher to adapt the teaching. Bingel enables teachers to better adapt information to students' level of knowledge, which challenges students at their level and based on their individual ability. This is possible because data can be linked to students based on different grades and different teaching materials placed on the platform. As a teacher, you have full insight into how students work at the student and class level. You can communicate by giving formative feedback but also giving praise and encouragement.

Viewed from a student´s perspective, Bingel is an adventure game mixed with concrete subject knowledge to help solve various problems that arise. Students are rewarded through various tools like medals, stickers or most importantly, points. These points can be used by the students to buy their avatars new clothes as an example. Furthermore, students can choose which tasks they want to implement and work with them at their own pace. This helps the material to be used individually, based on the student´s interests and abilities.

How can students start to bingel? Everything that is needed to bingle is an internet connection and a login. No program needs to be installed because everything is web-based. Each student receives his own login and can bingle both at school and at home.

You must have in mind when working with Bingel, like with every other ICT tool that you should always have a backup plan if planning to work during class. This is because even if you as a teacher add exercises to the island, it is not guaranteed that the students have access to the task. This can lead to misunderstanding and upset studenst, so make sure to have a backup plan during class. But even though this problem may occur, my students really enjoy working with Bingel. You try it too with your students and you will see a great joy and progress in learning.

Elevspel.se

One site that I have frequently used with my pupils is Elevspel.se. It is a multi-functional site that enables students to get extra training on specific areas of different subjects. I have used it both for individual students, in pairs and with the whole class on the smartboard. This is easily done if you have access to tablets and smart board witch you can connect to eachother. I like to set up a fast link by putting it directly on the homescreen of the tablet.

The website is open for use for anyone, but you can also create an account as a teacher and then move on to create accounts for the pupils in your class. By doing this you can keep track of what your students are doing and which progress they have made. From the first page you can click on different subjects such as Swedish, English or Maths. Once you have chosen your subject there are lots of different exercises to choose from. Each exercise is labeled with what you can learn from it, for example Days, months and seasons or English prepositions. There is also some additional information about what specifically you will be training, which schoolyears it would be appropriate for and a rating from the users of up to five stars. Once you have chosen an exercise there are usually two or more levels or varieties of the exercise, marked with what you are training or the level. Every exercise consists of cirka ten questions that you answer by chosing the correct alternative. Most exercises have got the oportunity to hear the options read out by a computer voice. You get an instant respons if you choose the correct of faulty alternative and you get a scoore of how many questions you answered correctly. After you have finished an exercise you can get awarded a gold, silver or bronze medal if you have enough points.

The advantages of this website are:
- easy to use
- easy access
- can be used individually, in pairs or as a group exercise in the whole class
- a lot of different exercises to develop your skills
- several levels or options for each exercise
- easy overview of what the focus of the exercise is and who it is appropriate for
- you can track your pupils development
- you can get each pupil to work on the things that they need

The issues, or things to keep in mind are:
- the pupils need to be able to read, as the instructions are almost exclusively written
- not all exercises are good ones, the quality varies and you you need to check it out befor you put the students up to an exercise
- since there are options to choose from, you can get it right by making a guess
- the website should be used as a complement to other teaching

To sum it all up, Elevspel.se is a useful tool to work on specific areas both individually and as a group. It can be a good way to diversify the teaching and keep the pupils interested and motivated at the same time as you get an overview of what the class needs to work on and what thet already know. With consideration to its limits and a proper plan of what you want the children to learn it is a good tool.
