I’m sure that you already are familiar with the website https://glosor.eu/ but it is worth mentioning. This site give both you as a teacher and your students help learning the vocabulary. Until now I only used it together with my daughter because I don’t teach English yet.
You can become a member for free but certain parts of the site has a cost. The most part of it’s paid for by advertisements, there are ads on the website. It’s really easy to sign in, you just need to have an username, a password and a mailadress. It took me about to minutes. After you logged in you can start making exercises for your students.
I tested to use the glossary for the homewoork this week, and after I hade written the words in the column I got access to the exercises immediately. For example: You can write the words or sentences in English and have them corrected right away. You can translate in both directions.
If you want to listen to the words you can get direct speech for a cost of 9:- /student and semester. Most of the students like this function so they can work on their pronounciation. Further more you can play different games. My favourite game is multiple choice, you get a list of words and you should choose the right one.
You can also print out exercises so you can work whith the glossary that way. That’s perfect for the students to have a list of the words for the week correctly spelled and in form of an exercise. (Not everyone can write right off the blackboard.)
The students can log in wherever they are and take part in these exercises. They can use glosor.eu to practise English at school and/or att home, My own daughter find this site useful because she can study the glossary for the week without help from me and she can go back and look on previous uploads when it’s time for an exam. It’s a resource for students, especially those who tend to misplace their homewoork. With this site they always have acces to the homewoork and it’s also spelled correcltly. I think this is a part the parents appreciate.
This is a commercial website but I have not seen inappropriate commercial yet. I teach mathematics and I appreciate the function that you can make statistics/chart about the results on the exercises.

Hi Marie! I used this site myself when I was studying Spanish! I really like it.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if there are more things except for the "direct speech" on the website that you have to pay for, and if you find it enough with just using the free version?
I think the function with "direct speech" seems to be good since the students can both see and hear the words without needing any help. It makes it a helpful tool to do the homework more fair to everyone, even for those who doesn´t have adults or anyone else that are available to help. Do you know if it is educational advertisements or if it´s random companies that sponsors the website? I think it´s good that you are writing that you haven´t seen any inappropriate commercial since the internet sometimes can be not trustily.
Can you as a teacher make many accounts with the same email adress?
Thanks for sharing this website, I knew about it but I had forgot it:).

Hi Kajsa!
DeleteNice to hear that you like this web site.
I like your questions and thoughts. Especially that it makes homework more fair. Spot on!
I have not yet find anything else that has a cost. I searched again but the only thing I found was a lot of more useful exercises on the site.
It’s mostly companies that has advertisement on the site that pays for the exercises, for example Comviq, Japanfoto, Casino Heroes, dansukker, but I did find Lernia, at least one that has to to do with learning. It is good that the ads really are small and not in the way of the purpose of the site and by the way you have to click on a link to get the ad visible.
On your account you can create many different groups so your classes can have different ones.
The way that ads on sites like this usually work is that they see where you're coming in from and tailor the ads accordingly. When I come in from Kalmar, for example, I often get ads from KLT (the local bus and train companies in Kalmar!).
DeleteFirst of all- I really like Glosor too; I think it´s a great tool and I´m happy more and more teachers are starting to use it. When I read your post there were a few things that popped into my mind though. Firstly, as far as homework is concerned I do believe you have a point about it being accessible for everyone since it´s on the internet. The problem is that not all students have access to a computer and/or internet at home. We need to remember that.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, the ads have never bothered me. In fact, I don´t think I can remember even seeing an ad. I don´t know what that says about me though- extremely focused or completely clueless??
Thirdly, the TTS-feature is a service that Glosor themselves have to buy from a third party and that´s why they charge you for it. I agree it´s a great feature, but I wouldn´t pay extra for it.
As a parent I like the fact that the teacher can create groups for their classes, it really helps with finding the right task and also looking at previous tasks for repetition.
Over all I agree with you, it is a great resource- easy to understand, navigate and access.
