AV-Media
Our school and municipality has an agreement with "AV- media" and that gives us a great opportunity to use a lot of digital media. For example we can stream film and use for some of our English lessons. I teach in second grade and we have found series of films called "Kids English Zone". Each film is about 15 min and with contents relating to children’s experience and living conditions. The children appreciate the funny actors and the English children, everyone are native speakers, and the topic in each film is well known. For example the topic can be family, breakfast, lunch, colors or feelings. It is very good for pupils to listen to well spoken English and the repetition of essential words is beneficial for the students. The pupils often says after the actors spontaneously.
Using those films connects to Lgr 11 (teaching English) in several ways:
Aim: "…In order to deal with spoken language and texts, pupils should be given the
opportunity to develop their skills in relating content to their own experiences,
living conditions and interests…"
"Content of Communication
• Subject areas that are familiar to the pupils.
• Interests, people and places.
• Daily life and ways of living in different contexts and areas where Englishis used…"Listening and reading – reception• Clearly spoken English and texts from various media.
• Simple instructions and descriptions.
• Different types of simple conversations and dialogues.
• Films and dramatised narratives for children…" ( from Lgr 11)
To be able to use such digital media as we do when we are streaming films it is necessary to have a computer, internet connection and possibility to use a multimedia projector. I really recommend "Kids English Zone" for young children beginning to learn the English language. The films are funny, simple, familiar topics and contain a lot of repetition.

Hello Carina! I'm also teaching a class of second graders and we used to watch those movies last year. The kids were crazy about them and it helped them to learn the coulours and numbers very well. The little dramas with the boys also helped the pupils to get the confidence to make little plays by them selves. I recommend them very much!

Hi there!
ReplyDeleteI really agree with you. The kids loved "Kids English Zone". We used to watch
"Go Yoyo Go" also. There we met Yoyo who lives with her Grandpa. As "Kids Engllish zone" each episode has a special theme for example Music, Families and How are you? The episodes with Yoyo are shorter than the other one. They lasts only for eight minutes.
The kids says it's a funny way to learn English. They like to watch it several times. The first time we just watch and listen. The next time we pause the episode to repeat some words and sentences. Av-media gives us a lots of opportunities in teaching all kinds of subjects.
We have been listening to "No Problem" without pictures. It is a Swedish spoken voice telling us about that episodes theme for example Christmas and Animals. there are many songs and rhymes in each episode. The bad thing as I see it is that it can be a bit difficult to follow the songs and rhymes if you don't know it or have the lyrics.
The target group for these programs are from six years old.

Hello Carina!
ReplyDeleteI haven´t watched Kids English Zone but will definitely have a look at it. We watch Go Yoyo Go and the pupils really like it. I think it´s a great resource to have Av-media.
As you mentioned in your blogpost there are many ways to connect the use with Lgr-11. Two example that you also brought up are:
• Different types of simple conversations and dialogues.
• Films and dramatised narratives for children…" ( from Lgr 11)
The only negative thing with the page is their search engine. Sometimes I feel that it is harder than it should to find what you are looking for.
Good post, good resource!

Hello Andreas! Thanks for your comments. I agree about the search engine, it could be easier to find what you are looking for. Sometimes there are problems to load up the movies. Maybe when there are hard pressure on the site. Anyway, Av-media is a great resource!

Hi! Thank you for the great tips on what shows are good to watch on AV-Media. I currently work in a förskoleklass and we have many students who speak a little English and they are also very motivated to learn more. I will definitely look at the films (and also the other films that were suggested in the comments) to see if they could possibly be shown to my students too.
ReplyDeleteI think AV-Media is a great resource and it's always nice to learn of new ways to use it and to get suggestions about what the children themselves enjoy.
Thank you!
Anna
